Here is a reminder of the main attacks against Jews in France since 1978, after at least two people were shot dead and at least five taken hostage at a Jewish supermarket in eastern Paris on Friday.
- March 19, 2012: A gunman bursts into a Jewish school in the French southwestern city of Toulouse, shooting dead three children and a teacher. A young Islamist, Mohamed Merah, is cornered by police three days later and killed during their assault.
- January 20, 2006: Ilan Halimi, 23, is kidnapped by a gang of youths, and tortured in a housing estate in Bagneux, south of Paris. Found on February 13, Halimi dies before reaching the hospital. The head of the gang, Youssouf Fofana, is sentenced to life in prison.
- November 15, 2003: A Jewish school attended by 200 students is burned down in Gagny, north of Paris.
- April 1, 2002: The Or Aviv synagogue in the southern French city of Marseille is destroyed in what is believed to be an arson attack, amid a wave of petrol bomb attacks on synagogues.
- September 7, 1995: A car bomb explodes in front of a Jewish school in Villeurbanne, central France, wounding 14 people. The attack is attributed to Islamic extremists.
- March 29, 1985: An explosion wounds 18 people in a Paris movie theatre during the Fourth International Jewish Film Festival.
- August 9, 1982: Five armed men open fire and throw grenades in a Jewish restaurant in central Paris, killing six people and injuring 22. It is the worst such attack in France since World War II, but those who committed it have never been brought to justice.
- April 3, 1982: Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov is killed in his apartment block in central Paris
- October 3, 1980: A bomb hidden in a motorbike bag explodes outside a synagogue in central Paris as prayers are being held, killing four and injuring around 20.
- March 27, 1979: An explosion wounds 33 people at a Jewish hostel in central Paris a day after Egypt and Israel sign a historic peace treaty.
- May 20, 1978: Three men open fire in the El Al boarding lounge at Paris's Orly airport, killing four and injuring five. The attack is claimed by a previously unknown Lebanese group.
