Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Donald Trump is going to win the presidency, based on his speech in which he expressed "regret" over the incendiary comments he's made during the presidential campaign.

"I'm going to go out on a limb tonight and you can keep this tape and remind me about it after the election, OK? Donald Trump's going to win," Gingrich told Fox News' Sean Hannity, according to Politico.

"Donald Trump's going to win because, in the end, the country is not going to reward big banks and big unions and big bureaucracies and big donors and big corruption by voting for a big liar. And in the end, the country is going to say, whatever Trump's weaknesses might be, he's a sincere guy trying very hard to get this country back on the right track," Gingrich said.

Hannity, who has supports Trump said, "I hope and pray you're right because I don't think we can survive four more years of these failed policies."

The Washington Examiner notes Gingrich blamed the media for Trump's poor showing in polls, saying that "people don't realize the effort by the elite media, the dishonest effort to submerge him has had an effect, but the effect is not on a secret ballot. The effect is, this is August. After August, I think we'll be in good shape."

The former House speaker, who was on Trump's short list of potential vice presidential candidates, called the GOP nominee's recent foreign policy speech "the most important foreign policy address since Ronald Reagan."

Trump has gained ground in some polls, including a Rasmussen poll that shows him within 2 points of Hillary Clinton.
