Former Speaker Newt Gingrich denounced The New York Times and Washington Post for their coverage of Donald Trump, declaring both prestigious newspapers were engaged in an "all-out war" with the GOP presumptive nominee.

In an interview with New York businessman John Catsimatidis on his radio show "The Cats Roundtable," Gingrich, who is considered to be on Trump's short list of possible vice presidential picks, used the case of a Times story on Trump's interaction with women as a case in point.

Excerpts of the interview were posted ahead of the broadcast by The Hill.

"Both the New York Times and the Washington Post have been in an all-out war to try to redefine Donald Trump," Gingrich said.

"Every single woman in the [Times] article [repudiated] the article, and say that the New York Times lied. They didn’t say those things," he added.

The Hill noted Rowanne Brewer Lane, who dated Trump, said her quote had been taken out of context. Gingrich also condemned Hillary Clinton for being "part of the establishment" who "understands how to lie about virtually everything."

"If you think that its OK to have a corrupt, dishonest government in Washington, Hillary Clinton is the perfect candidate," he said. "If you really believe we got to change America back to prosperity and jobs and creativity and dynamics, then Trump is the only candidate in this race that makes any sense at all."
