Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday that he was not interested in serving in a Donald Trump administration should the Republican front-runner win the White House in November.

"I wouldn't have such a conversation," Gingrich, 72, who served as the House's top Republican from 1995 to 1999, told The Hill. "I am not interested in such a conversation.

"I am having a great time doing a lot of fun things," he added. "It wouldn't be appropriate at this stage [to discuss administration roles].

"He's gotta finish winning the nomination and then beat Hillary [Clinton]."

Gingrich, who sought the nomination in 2012, has defended and praised Trump since his campaign began last June and attended a private meeting the developer had with Republican leaders on Monday in Washington, the Hill reports.

Gingrich said he offers Trump advice privately, adding that he was not sure whether his insights have been valuable because the businessman "operates with enormous intuition."

"Trump is his own strategic brain," he told the Hill. "While he listens to many people, I don't think in the traditional sense that he has any one adviser that's decisive in what he's doing."

Gingrich declined to discuss any private talks with Trump because to do so "violates the whole point of private advice," he said.
