The first Democratic debate had barely gotten out of the gate, when front-runner Hillary Clinton was taken on over charges she has flip-flopped over her political career, from trade deals to same-sex marriage.

"Will you say anything to get elected?" moderator Anderson Cooper asked.

Clinton insisted she has been "consistent over the course of my entire life," but added, "I do absorb new information, I do look at what's happening in the world."

Cooper countered that in July in New Hampshire, Clinton told a crowd she takes a back seat to no one when it comes to progressive values, but:

"Last month in Ohio you said you pled guilty to being kind of moderate and center. Do you change your political identity based on who you're talking to?"

Clinton insists she has a "range of views," but they are rooted in her values and experience.

Pressed whether she is a progressive or a moderate, Clinton said, "I'm a progressive, but I like to get things done."
