Hillary Clinton is being protected against criminal prosecution by the Democratic Party and will unlikely face any federal charges stemming from her use of a private email server to conduct government business when she was secretary of state, Donald Trump tells Newsmax TV.

Asked if Clinton could go to jail, the Republican presidential front-runner told Newsmax TV's Steve Malzberg: "I think she will end up in big problems. I think that she has got tremendous problems, but I think she's being protected by the Democrats.

"And somehow I don't think they're going to do anything to her, otherwise they would have told her by now don't run, you're not going to be able to run, I mean why would they let her go so far?"

Trump also told Malzberg he is surprised Clinton's recent poll numbers have been sinking and in some she is neck and neck with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

"It looks to me like she's just not doing very well … It's incredible she's doing so poorly against Bernie Sanders," Trump said.

For six months, the FBI has been investigating the private server scandal — whether classified government information was passed over and whether criminal charges are warranted.

The FBI will pass its recommendations onto the Justice Department, but it's is not known when the probe will end.

Last week, the State Department said 22 emails found on Clinton's home server contained "top secret" information. Clinton has denied she had any classified data on the server.

Clinton has been fighting to end questions about her use of a personal email server to conduct government business while she secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.

On Thursday, it was revealed former Secretary of State Colin Powell and aides to his successor Condoleezza Rice both received classified emails on personal email accounts.
