Hillary Clinton has an 8-point lead over Donald Trump in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, a new poll shows.

The Monmouth University survey of the Keystone State, released Tuesday, breaks down like this:

  • Clinton: 48 percent
  • Trump: 40 percent
  • Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson: 6 percent
  • Green Party nominee Jill Stein: 1 percent

Questioned about their pick in a U.S. Senate contest, the results show:

  • Democratic challenger Katie McGinty: 45 percent
  • GOP incumbent Sen. Pat Toomey: 41 percent

The poll's sample of error is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

According to Politico's Battleground States Polling Average of tracking polls since late July, Clinton has a 10-point advantage over Trump, 48.8 percent to 38.8 percent.

In other Monmouth poll findings:

  • Clinton has a crushing lead in the districts covering Philadelphia and its adjacent suburbs, 62 percent to Trump's 29 percent; the area accounts for more than 40 percent of the statewide turnout in a typical election, according to the pollster.
  • Trump holds a lead of 58 percent to 28 percent in the less populous northeastern and central part of the state

"It looks like Clinton's got a friend in Pennsylvania, particularly in the Philly suburbs," Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement.

"A key factor boosting Clinton's support there is that about half of white voters in this region have a college degree, compared to just over one-third in the rest of the state."
