Houston officials are trying to assure illegal immigrants they can seek refuge in shelters without presenting papers or revealing their immigration status.
Officials took to Twitter on Monday night to refute a rumor that papers were being checked at shelters set up for victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials also said neither Immigration and Customs Enforcements agents nor those from Customs and Border Protection are checking those at shelters, the Washington Examiner reported.
They urged those in need of help to go to shelters no matter what their immigration status.
