Huckabee: Support the Nominee or Hillary Wins in November

The GOP has been subject to a "hostile takeover" by Donald Trump, and is in jeopardy of losing a general election in which "the stars were really aligned for us," GOP activist Rodolfo Miliani tells Newsmax TV.

But former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee countered that "the party has an obligation to support the nominee," no matter who it is or risk losing the general election.

In a panel discussion on "Battleground Florida: Fight for the Primary" with the former governor, Miliani, who is a senior financial adviser and a supporter of Sen. Marco Rubio, " said the Florida lawmaker's performance in the state's Tuesday contest "is all about the turnout."

Miliani locked horns with Huckabee on Trump's position as GOP front-runner.

"The sad thing about this election cycle is that the stars were really aligned for us to have a very good year this year," he said. "It's very difficult to win three consecutive elections for a party," and "the economy has been stuck in very low growth mode for a while."

And Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, he added, is "not a very personable or attractive candidate."

"The only way we could blow this cycle is if we nominate someone who has more unfavorable and is less popular, less likable than she is and it seems to be that we're heading that way," Miliani said. "I feel like the party has been subject to a hostile takeover."

He also said he's not sure he could vote for Trump in a general election.

"I'm going to have to do a lot of serious soul searching and reflecting because my principles are really actually more important to me than my party," he said.

But Huckabee countered "the party has an obligation to support the nominee."

"There are people, particularly in the establishment of the party … that have almost decided our selection isn't working out and we don't like the election results, so we'll just go third party," he said. "That guarantees Hillary Clinton will be president."

Huckabee charged Clinton would run even if she was indicted for using a private email server while secretary of state. The issue is being investigated by the FBI.

"If she gets indicted she will stand up, fight it, call it political prosecution, and she will march right on," Huckabee said.

"In a way, it is the same kind of bravado that I think is causing Donald Trump to do well in the Republican side is never retreat, never back up," he added.

"Some of the viewers are way too young to remember the movie from 1972, 'Love Story.' But for those of us who are old enough, you'll remember that signature line, 'Love is never having to say you're sorry.' For Clintons, politics is never having to say you're sorry and they never have and they never will."
