Conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt, who has backed Donald Trump's candidacy, on Saturday joined the growing chorus of voices calling for the GOP presidential nominee to drop out of the race.
Hewitt first called on Trump to quit in a Saturday morning Tweet, saying it was best for the country, the Republican Party, his family and for his own good. More and worse opposition research is coming before the November 8 vote, he warned.
The plea came after the release of audio from 2005 in which Trump can be heard making lewd comments about women to Billy Bush, then co-host of the entertainment show "Access Hollywood."
Hewitt repeated his advice on MSNBC's "AM Joy," telling host Joy Reid, "I don’t think he can win."
Hewitt said he remains in the "Never Hillary" camp, opposing the election of Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Hewitt said he heard the story and Trump's video apology Friday night, then "slept on it" and decided to urge Trump to quit.
Hewitt said the opposition does not let out the worst oppo research a full month before the election and, "I can only image what is in the canon."
"The country doesn't need 30 days of what you just played replayed 5,000 times," he said.
