President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump had a "great, thorough conversation about Mr. Trump's victory," during an early morning phone call, Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Wednesday morning.
"It was a very warm conversation and we were happy to receive the call from the president," Conway told NBC's "Today" show. "He was congratulated and I think they resolved to work together, which is exactly what this country needs, to get the current president and the president-elect and others who are in leadership positions to help unify and heal the country. We expect that the two gentlemen will be meeting soon."
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said early Wednesday that Obama will discuss the election results with the press later in the day, including "what steps we can take as a country to come together after this hard-fought election season," reports USA Today.
Trump and Obama will meet in the White House on Thursday, reports said Wednesday morning.
Obama also called former secretary of state Hillary Clinton to express "admiration" for her campaign, Earnest said.
Meanwhile, Conway told the "Today" show that even with Trump's win, he'd still say the electoral system is "rigged," and on Tuesday, millions of people agree with him.
"I think, when he says the election is rigged, what he's really talking about is he couldn't believe that he wasn't winning," said Conway. "He'd look at these polls, hear everybody on TV constantly say he can't win, she's a shoo-in, the path is gone, there's no way. Look what happened yesterday."
Clinton also placed a call to Trump, and she said it's not up to the campaign to judge her conduct in making a call instead of a formal concession speech.
"I would expect and I've seen reported, Savannah [Guthrie], that Secretary Clinton will come out and address her supporters and the nation indeed today," Conway said. "I don't know if those reports are true, it makes sense to me. But she has to do that on her own comfortable timeline.
"We had made our way to the hotel to see our supporters and we intended just to do there what we were doing here all night, which is watch the returns, watch the different states be called, and then eventually a victory," Conway added.
"While we were getting ready to do that, we received a call from Secretary Clinton. I gave the phone to Mr. Trump and they had a very cordial, very warm conversation. Secretary Clinton congratulated Mr. Trump on his victory and she commended — excuse me, he commended her for being smart and tough and running a really hard-fought campaign."
Conway also dismissed a question about whether she'd really believed Trump would win, or if she just had a good "poker face."
"We just modeled the electorate very differently than conventional pollsters do," said Conway, a conservative pollster. "I think that sometimes there are conclusions in search of evidence. If everybody around you is saying the same thing, then you convince yourself that it must be true."
