Conway: Trump's Contact With Voters, Policy Speeches Narrowing Gap

GOP nominee Donald Trump is edging closer to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, in the polls, and that's because people are seeing more of him on the stump giving policy speeches such as the one planned in Phoenix on immigration Wednesday night, campaign manager Kellyanne Conway says.

"You have the scarcity strategy of the Clinton campaign, less is supposed to be more," Conway, while refusing to take credit for Trump's climbing numbers, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program on Wednesday. "We don't see her. She doesn't talk to the press. She totally disrespects you and your profession. We're out there giving speeches on law enforcement, defeating radical Islam, middle class tax relief, meeting with the president of Mexico today and giving speech on immigration. People are seeing the contrast."

Trump's afternoon meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will also give him further gravitas, said Conway, as "it will look like a president meeting with a world leader, in terms of what we expect and planned. That's up to them if they wish to make a joint statement."

But even without the meeting, Conway said "it's really amazing what happened in the past two weeks" with Trump's campaign.

"Three weeks ago, everybody's hair was on fire," she told the program. "Look at the polls. The race is over. The race is over. He can't recover. Hillary Clinton's number has stayed the same, static. Trump is incrementally catching up to her again."

Trailing Clinton's poll numbers may have been good for the Trump campaign, she continued, as it "lit a fire under the campaign."

"There's nothing that will sharpen the minds, stiffen the spine much like you're losing to Hillary Clinton," Conway told the program.

Clinton's own campaign didn't help her when it comes to African American and minority voters, said Conway, as the former secretary of state's attempt to tie Trump to white supremacists "didn't create a single job, didn't give health insurance to a single uninsured person, didn't deter one more radical terrorist from doing their dirty work," said Conway.

Trump also is taking his case directly to minority voters, she said, including planning to hold a meeting in Detroit.

"If you give voice, leadership, it's showing up and listening to their concerns," she said. "He's even done that in round tables ... it's just fascinating to watch how much he loves listening to them. It's not all about grievances. They're talking about their accomplishments and what motivates people in a positive fashion. We'll be the optimist, forward looking inspirational campaign that talks about substance."

She also ridiculed Clinton's decision to hire a psychologist to help her get under Trump's skin in the upcoming debates.

"Hillary hired a psychologist," she said. "I won't touch that. But if it's to help get under Donald Trump's skin ... what is she afraid of?"
