The Emmy Awards arrived a day after an explosion that left New York City rattled and dozens injured, but security was proceeding as usual at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck asked Emmys attendees to "stay vigilant."
The Los Angeles Police Department presence is strong around the downtown L.A. Live area, as is the private security provided by Noble Associates Worldwide. LAPD officers were doing their routine checks of cars -- opening trunks and scanning vehicles thoroughly with mirrors -- as they entered the downtown area where the awards ceremony will be held later this afternoon.
"As of this time, all law enforcement is aware, our two local intelligence centers are monitoring, but (there is) nothing indicating threats in our area," a source close to the event told Variety.
Beck also said those attending Sunday's L.A. Rams-Seattle Seahawks game (the first home game of the season) at the L.A. Coliseum should also be on alert.
"We ask everyone to stay vigilant and remember 'If you see something, say something!,'" Beck said in a statement, promising "there are no known, specific, or credible threats here in Los Angeles," and ensuring "a secure environment."
The red carpet is scheduled to open at 3 p.m. PT, with the ceremony starting at 4 p.m. PT. The show, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the second time, will air live at from the Microsoft Theater.
The red carpet is expected to sizzle Sunday afternoon, with the mercury topping 88 degrees as of noon. Bomb-sniffing dogs took a brief rest on the red carpet before going to work inside the theater.
Police believe the explosion in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea, which left 29 people injured -- all of whom have since been released from the hospital -- was caused by a homemade bomb that is not currently linked to international terrorism. Another device was discovered and removed only four blocks away.
New York was just one of three U.S. cities under attack in a 12-hour span; a similar bomb also erupted in New Jersey while a man stabbed eight people at a Minnesota mall, for which ISIS has now claimed responsibility.
