In the wake of President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected demands for a special prosecutor or independent panel to probe Russia's interference in the 2016 election, Politico reported.
"Today we'll no doubt hear calls for a new investigation, which could only serve to impede the current work being done," McConnell, R-Ky., said on the Senate floor.
His comments were in reference to the Senate Intelligence Committee's current probe of Russian meddling in the election, CNN noted. The committee investigation is led by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C.
"Partisan calls should not delay the considerable work of Chairman Burr and Vice Chairman (Mark) Warner," he said. "Too much is at stake."
McConnell noted Democrats were "complaining" about Comey's removal after being critical of his actions against Hillary Clinton during the campaign.
But the news network said his comments have not silenced Democrats about Comey's termination.
"The dismissal of Director Comey establishes a very troubling pattern," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. "This administration has now removed several law enforcement officials in a position to conduct independent investigations of the president and his administration."
