President Donald Trump is "learning the job," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Newsmax TV on Thursday — and his confrontational campaign style is adjusting to the realities of being commander-in-chief.
"Some of the things that were said during the campaign, I think he now knows simply aren't the way things ought to be," the Kentucky Republican said in an exclusive interview. "He's learning the job."
McConnell cited Trump saying Wednesday that NATO, which he steadily blasted on the campaign trail, was "no longer obsolete" after meeting with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House.
"He was very critical of NATO during the campaign," McConnell said. "Even suggested that NATO was obsolete.
"He said the other day that's not how I feel any longer."

Trump, however, did call for NATO's 28 member nations to contribute 2 percent of their GDP to defense spending, something the majority leader told Newsmax that he supports.
"I welcome adjustments that he makes from the campaign," McConnell said. "A lot of things are said in the campaign by candidates and turn out not to be the way it works when you're actually in office."
