The media is acting like a lynch mob regarding the Donald Trump video from 2005 in which he uses lewd language to describe women, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told CNN on Sunday.

Although Gingrich criticized Trump's comments on women in the video as "ugly" and "disgusting," he said, "This is as close to a media-created coup d'etat as it gets. This is almost equivalent of a lynch mob. You have all these people running amok."

Gingrich said the media was also showing bias by obsessing over a video from 11 years ago, but virtually ignoring just released WikiLeaks documents which apparently reveal excerpts of Clinton's private speeches, saying "When I look at all the different notes I've gotten today, all of it is about Trump. Not a single one says, 'gee, you think that some of the things that Hillary Clinton said in secret are really bad and make it hard for her to win?'"

The former speaker also lashed out at Republicans who have called on Trump to quit the presidential race, saying, "The last few days, I've been watching people who are normally adults running around in circles."

Gingrich himself has been critical recently of Trump, telling The New York Times after the first presidential debate the Republican candidate "has to decide that the presidency is worth drilling into," referring to his lack of preparation for the first debate against Democratic challenger Clinton.

He also told Fox News that Trump must be much more disciplined and not do unpresidential acts like sending out tweets at 3 a.m.
