Electing Hillary Clinton for president will let her reshape the U.S. Supreme Court and that could mean gun rights would be erased for law-abiding Americans, according to Chris Cox, executive director of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action.
Speaking at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland Tuesday, Cox declared that "a Hillary Clinton Supreme Court means your right to own a firearm is gone,"
The Hill reports.
Cox painted a hypothetical picture in his speech to delegates: A "violent predator" breaks in on a mother home alone with her baby.
"He's a three-time loser who was released from prison early because some politician wanted to show their compassion. What's she going to do? She'll dial 911 and pray," Cox said.
"So the question is, should she be able to defend herself with a firearm in her own home?" Cox asked. "That question is on the ballot this November."
Clinton's campaign quickly fired back with an email rejecting Cox's claim.
"Chris Cox just parroted Donald Trump's false claim that Hillary Clinton wants to repeal the Second Amendment. This debunked claim couldn't be farther from the truth," the campaign said.
In May, Donald Trump told a crowd that Clinton "wants to abolish the Second Amendment," a statement
Politifact rates as false.
"I believe in the Second Amendment. People have a right to bear arms. But I also believe that we can common-sensically approach this," Clinton said in January 2008 during a Democratic presidential debate.
"It's a very difficult political issue," Clinton told
The Des Moines Register in August 2015. "But we are smart enough, compassionate enough to balance legitimate Second Amendment rights concerns with preventive measures and control measures, so whatever motivated this murderer . . . we will not see more needless, senseless deaths."
