Doctors at the Orlando Regional Medical Center on Tuesday said that of the 44 victims who were admitted from Sunday's mass shooting, 27 of those remain hospitalized and six are "critically ill."

"Of these, six patients are in the intensive care unit and 21 patients are on the floor," Chief of Trauma Dr. Mike Cheatham said. "Of these patients we have six patients remaining in the hospital that are critically ill. We have five that are in guarded condition. And we have 16 patients that we would consider to be stable.

"No patients have succumbed to their injuries since the initial nine patients who came to us at the time of the shooting," Cheatham said at the press conference.

Cheatham said they did 28 operations Sunday, eight more Monday, and have eight more scheduled Tuesday.

Dr. Gary Parrish, head of the 75-bed emergency department, introduced the scene early Sunday morning at ORMC.

"Around 2 or so we got word that there were some shooting," Parrish said. "Now, we have a very busy trauma service, so getting shootings is not anything terribly unusual, but we didn't know quite what was about to hit us."

Dr. Katherine Bondani said after a slow trickle of patients, the floodgates opened.

"There was no paramedics coming in and giving us report and dropping them off," Bondani said. "They were being dropped off in truckloads and in ambulance loads where our amazing nurses and techs were putting them on stretchers and rolling them into us and telling us that another patient is here, another patient is here, another patient is here and quickly our trauma bay became full to capacity and we had to move people out."

Bondani said that after 30 minutes, multiple surgeons showed up to help.

"I saw dozens of nurses who I knew were not on that night who showed up," Bondani said. "I saw techs coming in without any notification at all, and we really didn't know what their injuries were until they were brought into the trauma bay. The trauma surgeons that were here called in backup quickly and they arrived unbelievably fast."
