Work is underway to ensure that the 49 people who lost their lives in Sunday morning's mass shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando receive proper burials, Florida Attorney Gen. Pam Bondi said Tuesday, while describing the horrific scene rescuers found inside the bar.
"The good news is that the 49 who have died have been identified,"
Bondi told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "We're doing everything we can to get funeral services taken care of. We did not realize that so many of these individuals had such limited resources. So I'm going to do everything I can to fight to ensure that they have proper burials. JetBlue [Airlines] has been
flying in their family members, which is amazing."
Bondi described a nightmarish scene inside the club, saying that rescuers found that the victims' bodies were stacked "with cell phones ringing. Can you imagine families trying to call their loved ones, imagine that scene behind us, where family members are trying to call their loved ones and they're dead inside that room? We know that the bodies have been removed. We're going to make sure they're treated with dignity and respect and receive proper burials."
The FBI has control of the crime scene, Bondi said, and are "doing a great job."
President Barack Obama is traveling to Orlando on Thursday, but Bondi said he has not been in contact with her or Gov. Rick Scott.
"If he wants to meet with us, of course we will, he's the president of the United States," said Bondi. "We'd be glad to meet with him and brief him and tell him what we know regarding the investigation and my close contact with the victims' families. There's no contact, our contact is with the boots on the ground, the FBI, the ATF, everyone working closely together here. No contact with the White House."
And, said Bondi, that is disappointing.
"This isn't about politics right now," she told Fox News. "This is about Americans. And I believe he should have reached out the the governor of the state of Florida, and he hasn't. And that's not going to stop us from protecting our LGBT community. Orlando, and our state."
