Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence Tuesday accused Democrat Tim Kaine for hurling an "avalanche of insults" at running mate Donald Trump during their debate in Virginia.

"At a time of great challenge in the life of this nation, where we've weakened America's place in the world, stifled America's economy, the campaign of Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine has been an avalanche of insults," the Indiana governor said during their debate at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.

The question from moderator Elaine Quijano of CBS News was regarding illegal immigration.

"Donald Trump has built a business through hard times and through good times," Pence said. "He's brought an extraordinary business acumen, he's employed tens of thousands of people in this country."

Kaine had slammed Trump on a range of accusations he said the Republican has made during the campaign, ranging from comments about illegals, former Vietnam POW Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Miss Universe winner Alicia Machado.
