Donald Trump owns a slight 3-point lead over Hillary Clinton in the dead-red state of Georgia, according to the latest Monmouth University poll.
The results, albeit with a margin of error at almost 5 points:
- Trump: 45 percent;
- Clinton: 42 percent;
- Gary Johnson: 8 percent;
- Undecided: 5 percent.
Clinton leads Trump in the greater Atlanta area by 20 points — 55 percent to 35 percent — due mostly to the large black population concentrated there. Trump leads 51 percent to 33 percent in the rest of the state.
Clinton leads with black voters, 88 percent to 4 percent while Trump's lead with whites is also strong — 66 percent to 20 percent.
Among white voters, Trump leads with every demographic:
- Men: 67 percent to 20 percent;
- Women: 65 percent to 21 percent;
- Educated: 54 percent to 41 percent;
- Without a college degree: 78 percent to 10 percent;
- Over 50: 68 percent to 23 percent;
- Under 50: 63 percent to 16 percent.
"There has been some talk of Georgia becoming part of a demographic realignment in presidential politics. However, Clinton is not quite making the needed inroads among young white voters to take the lead here," said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted from Sept. 15 to 18 with 401 Georgia residents likely to vote in the November election. This sample has a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent.
