The Great America PAC, which endorses Donald Trump, has hired veteran Republican operative Jesse Benton, who has ties to Kentucky Sens. Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell, as its chief strategist.

"There is a growing movement behind Donald Trump, bringing new voters to the GOP in an unprecedented way," Benton said in an email, reports Politico.

"Great America PAC will help grow and harness that movement, unify Republicans and work to win not just the White House, but to also lengthen Mr. Trump's coattails in races across the America."

Benton, 38, ran a pro-Paul super PAC earlier this election season and in 2014 was a top aide for McConnell's reelection bid. He also helped guide Sen. Ron Paul's presidential bid in 2012 and was a top aide on his Senate bid in 2010.

Trump has strongly opposed super PACs and attacked rivals for using them, but he has accepted millions in donations, reports Politico.

Great America launched initially in January under the name TrumPAC, and after it launched, a Trump attorney told the group it couldn't use his name in its title.

"I think Jesse is one of the best political minds in the country," said Doug Wead, who also worked for the Pauls. "He understands the cross-section of the insurgent outsider and the political establishment."

Chris LaCivita, another former top Paul aide and past National Republican Senatorial Committee political director, told Politico Benton is a "consummate professional and a damn good political operative."
