George H.W. Bush, 94, "was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom," Queen Elizabeth II wrote in a message to the president on the United States of America and the people of America.
"It was with sadness that I learned of the death of President George H.W. Bush last night," the message read. "President Bush was a great friend and ally of the United Kingdom. He was also a patriot, serving his country with honour and distinction in Office and during the Second World War."
George H.W. Bush died Friday night, less than eight months after his wife of 73 years Barbara had died.
"Prince Philip and I remember our days in Texas in 1991 with great fondness," she added.
The royal family had visited the 41st U.S. president during a 12-day tour.
