Police in Burlington, Vermont are preparing for possible chaos after the Donald Trump campaign gave away 20,000 free tickets for his appearance Thursday night at the Flynn Center.

But the venue holds only 1,400 people.

That's likely to leave those left out in the cold a little hot under the collar, police, who have to work the event, fear.

At least 18,000 have said they will be at the event, Burlington Police Department Deputy Chief Bruce Bovat told Business Insider.

"It's politics, there's a charged energy," Bovat said. "We understand emotions fly high with this charged energy."

No one in the Trump campaign talked to local officials before giving out so many tickets, Bovat said.

Had a rock group sold 20,000 tickets for a concert at the Flynn Center the city would have canceled it, Police Chief Brandon del Pozo told the Burlington Free Press, but since it was a major presidential candidate, the event was allowed to be held.

Trump, via Twitter, advised people show up early since the venue isn't big enough and the city wouldn't allow speakers for the overflow.

CNN reported that crowds were doing just that, and the Free Press was updating its website with street closings as crowds began to gather.

As Trump prepared to head for Vermont, he acknowledged things would be exciting.
