Donald Trump, who has romped two victories in the last three early voting contests, "actually underperformed" in Nevada's caucuses, GOP presidential rival Sen. Marco Rubio argues.

In an interview on "Fox and Friends," the Florida lawmaker, who finished second in the GOP caucuses Tuesday, points out former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did far better in Nevada in both 2008 and 2012.

"Last time, Mitt Romney got over 50 percent, so Donald Trump actually underperformed [what] Mitt Romney did, not once but twice in this state," Rubio said.

The Hill
notes Romney won Nevada in 2012 in a four-person race with Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum, compared to the five-person race currently playing out in the GOP; he commanded more than 50 percent over six candidates in 2008.

"Until there's some consolidation here, you're not going to have a clear  alternative to Donald Trump," Rubio tells Fox & Friends. "I'm the conservative that consolidates the party."
