Here’s some good news for frugal gents with bedroom problems: The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic form of Viagra.
CBS News reports that Israel's Teva — the world's largest maker of generic drugs — will have exclusive rights to sell generic Viagra (sildenafil citrate) in the U.S. for 180 days.
The drug is likely to become one of the most widely used medications once it becomes available for purchase in December 2017, experts predict. A second drug company, Mylan, also plans to start selling generic Viagra in the U.S in 2017, and nine other drug-makers have reportedly applied to the FDA to sell sildenafil citrate.
Generic Viagra has been available for sale in the European Union since 2013.
Pfizer's Viagra profits are estimated at $1.7 billion a year worldwide.
