Should I Stop Taking Calcium?

Question: I have been taking calcium supplements for years to avoid osteoporosis. I’m 63-year-old female. But now I read that calcium pills can cause heart problems, which worries me because heart disease runs in my family. Should I stop taking calcium?

Dr. Cwynar's answer:
No, continue taking calcium supplements unless lab tests ordered by your doctor that you should cut your dosage or stop taking them. The post-menopause woman's dose is typically 500 mg three times a day. Make sure you take a good quality supplement. These may run a bit more money, however you generally get what you pay for when it comes to supplements.
