How Is Anxiety Diagnosed and Treated?

Question: My husband gets anxiety attacks a few times a week. They cause his heart to race and he says he feels like he is going to die. What should he do?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Acute anxiety can be disabling. Your husband needs to see his doctor to exclude physical causes for his symptoms. Until then, he should eliminate caffeine and alcohol. He should also try to cut back on foods rich in additives, which can sometimes cause anxiety, and stop all supplements not prescribed by his doctor. Exercise can also ease anxiety in some people.

He may be advised to take medication once or twice a day to reduce his anxiety, as he modifies his diet and activity. Be sure he gets 8 to 10 hours of sleep and has eliminated nicotine also.

Depending on what his doctor tells him, your husband may also want to consider a psychiatric consultation.
