A record 86% of adults said they have worn masks in public in the past week according to a new Gallup Poll. The results also show that 54% of Americans are concerned about the lack of social distancing in their area. These figures show a dramatic increase in coronavirus prevention measures taken by the public compared to previous figures compiled in early April.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was slower to advise the public about wearing face masks than it was to recommend social distancing. In April, about 51% said they wore face masks in public compared to the record high of 86% recorded in Gallup’s June 22-28 poll.

According to Fast Company, the news comes at a good time. America is experiencing a large increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases across the country. Face masks do offer protection against the virus and are a valuable tool help reduce the spread of infection, the Mayo Clinic explains.

Another interesting fact gleaned from the Gallup Poll is that essentially all Democrats (98%) said they wore masks during the past week compared to 66% of Republicans and 85% of Independents.

According to Fast Company, masks are mandatory in many states including Pennsylvania, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Kansas, Texas, Michigan, California, New Jersey, Oregon and Massachusetts. In these states, people are required to wear face coverings when out in public and when social distancing isn’t possible.
