A rookie Florida lawmaker and Iraq war veteran known for his combative style says the Arizona shootings won't change the way he talks, according to the
"Post on Politics" blog of the Palm Beach Post. Rep. Allen West, a tea party-backed Republican and former Army officer, says the calls for a general cool-down of political rhetoric are more about partisanship than public safety.
"In tough times, we have to use a little bit of stronger language when you start talking about the future legacy of my country,” West said.
West, who made the comments at a breakfast on Tuesday morning with South Florida business leaders, said that, if security increases at future constituent meetings, "It's not so much about my protection. It's about your protection. I want to make sure that you can come out in a free and safe environment."
