Democrats have been quick to brand Republicans as xenophobic for their strong stance against illegal immigration this year. But that shouldn’t stop Hispanic Republican candidates from making historic gains tomorrow,
Politico reports.
First, there’s Marco Rubio of Florida, who is expected to win election to the Senate. There’s even talk that he could be the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2012 and perhaps presidential nominee in the future.
New Mexico attorney Susana Martinez will likely become the country’s first Latina governor. And former federal judge Brian Sandoval will probably become Nevada’s first Latino governor.
Hispanic Republicans could win three or more seats in the House, up from three now.
“People have always tried to say Latinos are solidly Democratic, they’re always Democratic,” says Arturo Vargas, executive director of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials Education Fund. “They’re not. It is a community whose vote is up for grabs.”
