New Miss America Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska revealed her embrace of the Constitution in an exclusive videotaped interview with
HumanEvents.com at an event for the conservative Young America’s Foundation, and says President Barack Obama isn't being faithful to the document.
Scanlan, the youngest Miss America in 90 years at just 18, said that
when it comes time to cast her first vote, in 2012, she will be looking at candidates’ adherence to the Constitution rather than their political party.
“I think that’s the biggest thing we’ve moved away from,” she said. “If we disobey and pay no attention to the very thing that founded this country, we have no consistency in our government, nothing to trust, and no reliable bases for those that govern our country.”
Interviewer Jason Mattera suggested that pageant contestants are expected to give a politically correct response during the question-and-answer portion. Scanlan agreed that while that’s certainly possible, Miss America judges are not allowed to score contestants poorly for differing opinions. Scanlan’s question was about Wikileaks. She said she knew her opinion — that security trumps people’s right to know — was probably not shared by the judges, but she gave it anyway. The most important thing when answering, she said, is to not offend anyone.
Scanlan scored Obama poorly for his faithfulness to the Constitution, saying that “there are definitely issues there that he’s not paying attention [to] like he should,” and suggested “ignorance” might be to blame since constitutional law is no longer stressed in school curriculums.
