N.Y. Daily News Publisher Mulls Senate Run

New York Daily News publisher Mortimer Zuckerman has held serious discussions about challenging incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, according to The New York Times.

Zuckerman, 72, would run as a Republican or independent to avoid a costly primary battle against Gillibrand, a Democrat, reports the Times. The billionaire real estate mogul would try to appeal to voters as a political outsider and savvy businessman in a time of economic uncertainty.

Despite the Times report, a Zuckerman spokesman issued a statement that said "Mr. Zuckerman is not interested in running for public office."

Gillibrand may face a primary challenge from former Tennessee Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr.
