Obama Adviser: US-Israel Bond Remains Unbreakable

Wednesday, 21 April 2010 07:29 PM EDT ET

The president's top national security adviser says there is "no space" between the U.S. and Israel when it comes to Israel's security.

The comments by retired Marine Corps Gen. James Jones come on the heels of a diplomatic skirmish between the two countries after Israel announced plans to expand settlements in east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital.

Speaking to the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Jones said the U.S. "will never waiver in defense of Israel's security" and that the bond between the two nations remains "unbreakable."

Jones also said an independent Palestinian state is still in everyone's interest and would keep Iran from "shifting attention away" from its desire for a nuclear weapon.
