Using its clearest language on the subject so far, the White House Wednesday left open the possibility of the President openly backing the conservative primary opponent to Trump critic and Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich.
“I’ll let the President make that determination,” was how Press Secretary Sarah Sanders replied to Newsmax’s query about whether Trump would support State Rep. Jim Lower’s challenge to the controversial Amash in Michigan’s 3rd District (Grand Rapids).
Earlier in the day, Amash tweeted that special counsel Robert Mueller’s “farewell speech” on Wednesday meant “the ball’s in our [the House’s] court” on impeaching Trump.
Asked about that comment, the President’s top spokeswoman told us, “I don’t think Congressman Amash is worth the time of the White House.”
Five-termer Amash had created a storm a week ago as the only Republican Member of Congress to suggest the Mueller report meant that Trump “has engaged in impeachable conduct.”
Trump retorted that the Water Wonderland congressman was a “total lightweight” and “loser.”
Sanders’ comments on Amash came the day after the congressman faced a standing-room-only town hall meeting in Grand Rapids to explain his break with Trump. During the meeting, he drew several standing ovations.
