2010 Elections Spell Disaster for Democrats

How bad are things looking for Democrats in the November midterm elections? Here are a few signs.

President Barack Obama has gone hat in hand to Bill Clinton, the only elected Democratic president to win re-election since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. (Mr. Clinton is also the only elected president ever to be impeached).

The reason: Mr. Obama is now so unpopular that his appearance in up-for-grabs congressional and senate districts could be the kiss of death for their Democratic incumbents.

Rumors have begun that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel might be using this as leverage by threatening moderate Democrats that unless they vote as Obama wishes on key issues, they might face TV spots in which President Obama endorses them.

Get ready for local conservative ads in which Democratic incumbents morph into President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Another sign of Democrats in trouble is Chris Matthews of MSNBC, the loony left cable network.

Matthews traditionally pretends to be fair and willing to engage Republicans on issues. But when it counts, usually starting about six weeks before a national election, this former hatchet man for former Democratic House boss Tip O'Neill drops his pretense and starts slanting his show in favor of Democrats.

This year, with almost 100 days to go before the November elections, Matthews, in apparent panic mode, has already begun tilting entirely left on his syndicated Sunday NBC show.

And like many Democrats embarrassed by their president, Matthews' guilty subconscious injected a telling Freudian slip into Sunday's show.

Matthews inadvertently called the politician who he once said sent a shiver up his leg "President O'Carter."
