Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is the gift to the Republican Party that never stops giving, and on Thursday it was Christmas, Easter, and everyone’s birthday all wrapped up into one.
She unveiled her much-anticipated Green New Deal, which calls for a complete overhaul of society within the next decade, including the elimination of all internal combustion engines, air travel, and would "upgrade or replace every building in the United States for state-of-the-art energy efficiency.”
Its goal is to make America rely 100 percent on clean, renewable energy “to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions” within 10 years. It earned a thumbs-up from global warming guru Al Gore.
But the Green New Deal is more than an energy policy — it’s a blueprint to completely overhaul society as we know it. It’s a cradle-to-grave social contract that is a socialist’s dream and a capitalist’s nightmare.
It aims to guarantee a “job with a family-sustaining wage, family and medical leave, vacations, and retirement security.”
It also provides “free” medical care and “free” education for life.
Freeloaders are also taken care of. Calling upon the ghosts of FDR and Karl Marx, it claims that it would provide “economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work” (emphasis added).
Politico, not exactly a right-wing publication, referred to it as “The Impossible Green Dream of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.”
The publication concluded that “it’s generally best to focus on one impossible dream at a time.”
Wall Street Journal columnist and frequent Fox News contributor Kimberly Strassel thought it was perfect — for the Republican Party.
“By the end of the Green New Deal resolution (and accompanying fact sheet) I was laughing so hard I nearly cried,” she tweeted. “If a bunch of GOPers plotted to forge a fake Democratic bill showing how bonkers the party is, they could not have done a better job. It is beautiful.”
Reason reported that the “plan would involve installing 335,000 onshore wind turbines; 154,000 offshore wind turbines; 75 million residential photovoltaic systems; 2.75 million commercial photovoltaic systems; 46,000 utility-scale photovoltaic facilities; 3,600 concentrated solar power facilities with onsite heat storage; and an extensive array of underground thermal storage facilities.”
Providing those green energy needs would require approximately 500,000 square kilometers — greater than the size of California, the union’s third largest state.
And the government (the taxpayer) would pay for all this — with a little help from the Federal Reserve to "extend credit." In addition, "new public banks can be created to extend credit too."
Printing money never ends well. Just ask the people of Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Germany’s early 20th century Weimar republic.
Ben Shapiro, The Daily Wire’s editor in chief, posted two photos, one next to the other, with this caption: “What Democrats think the Green New Deal would look like” he tweeted, "vs. what it would actually look like."
The photo on the left was Willy Wonka’s magical, fantasy world, complete with a delicious chocolate river running through it.
On the right was the tent city that was the reality of the Fyre Festival, where people paid tens, some even hundreds of thousands of dollars, upon the promise of hobnobbing with beautiful people in luxury accommodations at a tropical paradise.
Podcast host and frequent Fox News contributor Allie Stuckey agreed that the Fyre Festival was the perfect analogy.
“The Green New Deal is the Fyre Festival of legislative proposals,” she tweeted. “Everyone spends all their money on what's promised to be an amazing destination only to get there and find yourself sleeping in a tent and selling your soul for a bottle of Evian.”
What’s really surprising though is the others Ocasio-Cortez is taking down with her, including 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California, and Cory “I am Spartacus” Booker of New Jersey.
One senator not quite on board, despite her far-left leanings, is Hawaii’s Mazie Keiko Hirono. “That would be pretty hard for Hawaii,” she said, referring to the proposal’s ban on air travel in favor of high-speed rail.
Looking back, in response to President Barack Obama “fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” including passing Obamacare, pushing his own green agenda, limiting religious freedom, and shutting down gas and oil leases on federal lands and offshore, he got a shellacking and the House turned from blue to red.
That’s typical for the party occupying the White House, as a response to a new administration’s new agenda.
Assuming a majority of the Democratic Party follows Ocasio-Cortez in her march off the cliff, this time the electorate may go running to the White House’s vision of sanity.
