The military is working with a defense contractor to develop tools that would allow soldiers to use their minds to control machines and other equipment.

According to Defense One, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is now in the process of putting together research teams to study the issue and begin working on it. The project falls under the category of artificial intelligence.

Called neural interfaces, the technology is already used for things like controlling prosthetics and translating a person's thoughts into typed text. DARPA is now examining how the technology can be used for military use through its Intelligent Neural Interfaces program.

If it works, experts envision soldiers being able to control military systems with their thoughts, rather than a physical action.

DARPA is seeking teams to build prototypes over an 18-month period. Each team would be given a budget of up to $1 million.

Last week, the Pentagon released a blueprint for implementing AI into its equipment, systems, and networks for the future, particularly as other counties like China continue to develop their own AI capabilities.

"AI will not only increase the prosperity of the nation but enhance our national security," said Dana Deasy, the Pentagon's chief information officer.

"We must adopt AI to maintain our strategic position and prevail on future battlefields."
