Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson says that whether the Bible has authority over the U.S. Constitution depends on the specifics.

Carson was posed the question during an appearance on "Meet the Press" Sunday. It was submitted by a Facebook user.

Moderator Chuck Todd told Carson he was ending with a "simple question … Does the Bible have authority over the Constitution?"

Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon and devout Seventh-day Adventist, paused before replying, "That is not a simple question."

"I think probably what you have to do is ask a very specific question about a specific passage of the Bible and a specific portion of the Constitution," Carson said. "I don't think you can answer that question other than out of very specific context."
