The new book by former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has hit the Conservative Book Club's best-seller list, placing at No. 8 on the April 15-21 list.

From Jailer to Jailed: My Journey from Correction and Police Commissioner to Inmate #84888-054," published on March 31, tells of Kerik's fall from grace as police commissioner and American hero to a Federal Prison inmate convicted of tax fraud and false statements.

For nearly six years, Kerik served as First Deputy and later Commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, overseeing the city's jail system.
In August 2000, he was appointed the 40th Police Commissioner of the City of New York, responsible for 55,000 civilian and uniformed personnel and a $3.2 billion budget.
Kerik was commissioner during the 9/11 attacks and led the NYPD through its rescue and recovery efforts.
In December 2004, President George W. Bush nominated Kerik as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A week later, Kerik withdrew his name from consideration after admitting that he failed to pay payroll tax for his children's nanny.
After years of state and federal investigations, Kerik pleaded guilty to false statements and tax charges relating to his children's nanny and discounted apartment renovations. He was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison. He entered prison in May 2010 and was released in October 2013.

Jailer to Jailed,' Kerik talks about his ordeal in solitary confinement, the mental and physical torment of being locked up in a cage, and his feelings of powerlessness.
