There are many competitive races in which President Joe Biden is not welcome by the Democrat candidates, NPR reported.
While Biden has hit the road pressing hard for some Democrats, others prefer that he stay away.
As recent polls continue to show his approval rating still underwater, there are many races where he could hurt more than he could help, the news outlet said.
"The history books show that an incumbent president is not a boost to their party in their midterms,” said Lis Smith, a Democrat strategist. "If Jesus Christ himself were an incumbent president, members of his political party would probably stiff-arm him in a midterm election."
NPR noted some Democrat candidates have avoided making campaign appearances with Biden by claiming scheduling conflicts.
And NPR noted Republicans have mocked Biden and Democrats for this.
"This is not Joe Biden's first rodeo," Smith said. "He lived through the 2010 shellacking, where having Barack Obama be so visible in the midterms actually hurt Democrats. So, he's trying to learn from the mistakes of the past, put his ego in the back seat. And it's the best thing for the party as a whole."
However, Biden has been in demand to raise money for his party. At a recent fundraiser in Los Angeles, Biden helped raise $5 million. The money is aimed at helping congressional candidates throughout the U.S., including those in swing districts who presently wouldn't want to be appear with Biden in public.
"Any president — even an unpopular president — is the most effective fundraiser in the party," said Brendan Doherty, a politics professor at the U.S. Naval Academy who tracks presidential travel.
In August, The Washington Post reported in August that Biden was in an uncomfortable position, as an anchor for some candidates.
The newspaper said candidates in key races in battleground states are either not asking Biden to come — or actively avoiding him when he does. The newspaper attributed its information to a survey it conducted of more than 60 candidates in the most competitive gubernatorial, U.S. Senate, and congressional campaigns in the nation.
But the White House said Biden will hit the road a lot in the weeks leading up to the midterms. However, it remains unclear which candidates he will campaign for, NPR noted.
"We're always getting incoming requests," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. ”We have a lot of good things to talk about."
