Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are neck-and-neck in the 2020 presidential race, with Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg in third place, a poll of Democrat Iowa caucus voters shows.
Emerson Polling says former vice president Biden has 25 percent support, Sanders 24 percent, South Bend’s Buttigieg 11 percent, and the only other double-digit candidate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., 10 percent.
"The biggest surprise in this poll is Mayor Pete, last week we saw him inching up in our national poll, and now he’s in double digits in Iowa, America is going to be asking who is ‘Mayor Pete’?” said poll director Spencer Kimball.
Buttigieg hasn’t formally declared his candidacy.
“If Buttigieg is able to maintain his momentum, his candidacy appears to be pulling from the same demographic of young voters as Sanders, and that could become a problem for Sanders,” Kimball added.
The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 6.2 percentage points.
