New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has responded to President Donald Trump’s repeated criticism after videos surfaced showing people dousing police officers with water.

"Crime's gone down year after year in New York City and it's not just because you finally left town," de Blasio, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, tweeted at Trump on Thursday after Trump tweeted that the mayor should "stand up" for officers and "act immediately," in response to videos showing New Yorkers dousing officers with buckets of water appearing online this past week.

De Blasio added: "Here are the facts: New York City is the safest big city in America — and we got there because our NYPD officers and our communities worked together to drive crime to all-time lows. That's real work that we've done that ACTUALLY protects our officers."

He concluded, Trump "knows NOTHING about his hometown. He never lived a real New York City life. He should get off Twitter and stick to what he's good at: watching TV when he claims to be working."

De Blasio described the recent dousing as "completely unacceptable, tweeting: "The NYPD kept New Yorkers safe through the heatwave and last night's outages. We won't tolerate this kind of disrespect."
