Conservative writer Bill Kristol said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton has "been playing defense" in recent weeks with the email scandal and other issues — and that is helping Donald Trump in the polls.
"I am not pro-Trump, but he has been on the offensive," The Weekly Standard editor told Wolf Blitzer on CNN. "She has been on the defensive. He is gaining somewhat in the polls.
"He's talking about foreign policy," Kristol said, referring to Trump's national security speech earlier Wednesday in Philadelphia.
"She won't even talk about foreign policy, because she's so worried about defending President [Barack] Obama or defending indefensible policies of President Obama — or even explain how different she is from Obama on some things.
"Even on domestic policy, what is she for?" Kristol asked.
Recent polls are showing Trump either slightly ahead of his Democratic opponent, narrowing Clinton's lead — or both White House contenders as virtually tied.
"She is playing defense too much," Kristol told Blitzer. "She is really just playing defense."
