Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker says his fellow Republicans are willing to work with President Barack Obama on a range of issues, but they first want to see some plausible plans.
One of those issues is closing the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba facility holding detainees from America's war on terror.
"All of us have been open to major changes at Gitmo," Corker said on "Fox News Sunday." "What he's doing right now is not as sensible as laying out a plan for the future as to how we're going to deal with all of the detainees at Gitmo."
Host Chris Wallace asked whether Republicans would block Obama if he tries to close the facility on his own.
"If he tries to close it on his own, we'll see." Corker said. "Is there a plan of some kind that he has laid out? That's what all of us have been seeking … for the last six years."
Obama campaigned for office in 2008 vowing to shut down the facility. Many oppose a plan to move the remaining detainees to American soil, where their presence could spark new attacks.
But Obama's recent moves to simply free some of the suspects or, in one case, to trade them for American soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who was held by the Taliban, have elicited anger from many on the right.
On other subjects:
Corker said that there is no question that if the U.S. deal with Iran over its nuclear program falls apart there will be additional sanctions. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee may take up a bill that says Congress has to weigh in on any deal, he said.
Corker also said Republicans are open to talking about sending U.S. ground troops to fight the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq.
"It depends," he said, but the GOP wants the White House to lay out a "plausible outcome" before giving an authorization.
