Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., facing likely challenges from the left and right in his re-election next year, is reportedly kicking off his campaign with a book detailing his brand of conservatism – and how it relates to rifts in the Republican Party.

The New York Times reported the Arizona Republican worked on the book privately — and without telling his political advisers.

According to the Times, Flake's book draws the line between his view of government and those on the right, which he describes as nationalist and populist – defiantly explaining his differences with President Donald Trump.

Flake's decision to write the book caught some of his political supporters by surprise, the Times reported — and the senator has now begun informing key allies, the Times reported.
