A $42.8 million contract to construct three miles of border wall on federal land in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas has been awarded by Customs and Border Protection, CNN is reporting.
The contract was given to Kiewit Infrastructure West Co., It includes money for construction of "18-30 foot tall steel bollards, in addition to road construction, detection technology, and lighting installation."
CNN reported there are currently no barriers in that particular area. Construction will begin in August.
A federal judge had halted the administration's efforts to redirect military-designated funds to build sections of the wall on the Mexican border. But CNN said the ruling will have no impact in the new contract since the funds for that particular section were appropriated earlier this year.
The Rio Grande Valley accounts for a large percentage of apprehensions and narcotic seizures on the southern border, CNN reported, attributing the information to Customs and Border Protection.
