American and Canadian diplomats working in Havana have been diagnosed with serious health conditions including mild traumatic brain injuries and damage to the central nervous system, CBS News reports.

CBS reviewed a doctor's evaluations of the diplomats who complained of hearing loss, nausea, headaches and balance disorders beginning late last year.

Officials are investigating whether the diplomats were targets of a sonic attack directed at their homes, which were supplied by the Cuban government, a source told CBS News.

The source also said American diplomats also have been the victims of vandalism, round-the-clock surveillance and home break-ins.

A State Department spokesperson for Western Hemisphere Affairs told CBS News:

"We remain in regular contact with the Cuban government to emphasize that we take these incidents very seriously and to resolve this matter in a satisfactory manner."
