The Cliven Bundy conflict in Nevada will give rise to "more anti-government violence over the next year," according to a report from Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis obtained by
Breitbart News.
The seven-page document says that the "perceived victory" of rancher Bundy’s standoff in Bunkerville with the Bureau of Land Management has prompted a "growing trend of anti-government violence compared to the previous four years and inspired by perceived government overreach and oppression."
The report, entitled "Domestic Violent Extremists Pose a Threat to Government Officials and Law Enforcement," said that the recent murders of two Las Vegas law enforcement officers by a married couple who took part in the Bundy showdown indicated that anti-government violence would surface again.
"After years of only sporadic violence from violent domestic extremists motivated by anti-government ideologies, I&A has seen a spike within the past year in violence committed by militia extremists and lone offenders who hold violent anti-government beliefs," the leaked document says, according to Breitbart.
"These groups and individuals recognize government authority but facilitate or engage in acts of violence due to their perception that the United States Government is tyrannical and oppressive, coupled to their belief that the government needs to be violently resisted or overthrown."
The report also said that there had been a "surge in militia and lone offender extremists’ events with anti-government motivations and targets."
In April, a 20–year feud over grazing rights between Bundy and the BLM erupted when the agency attempted to seize his herd, with the rancher’s armed supporters attempting to prevent the rancher’s cattle from being taken for non-payment of taxes. The agency eventually backed down and returned cattle it had confiscated.
Two months later, Jerad and Amanda Miller, who briefly took part in the Bunkerville standoff, killed three people in Las Vegas in a pizza restaurant ambush, including two police officers, before she skilled herself during a standoff and he was shot dead by police. The couple, believed to be white supremacists, left a swastika and a Gadsden flag by the bodies of the officers.
Bundy’s son Ammon said that the Millers were "very radical" and were kicked off the ranch after only a few days because they didn’t "align themselves" with their protest movement, Breibart reported.
