Rep. Chip Roy, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, said Friday he agrees with President Donald Trump that there is an emergency at the nation's southern border, but he does not think the president should sign a "flawed" government funding bill heading his way.
"We do have an emergency," the Texas Republican told CNN's "New Day." "There are about 400,000 people that are going to be flowing through the Rio Grande Valley this year alone, of whom only 200,000 will be apprehended. The other 200,000, 90 percent will be caught and released."
There are real issues, he continued, but the "balance of power" matters.
"I wouldn't sign this bill," said Roy. "I think this bill undermines the president in making an emergency declaration because he's signing a flawed bill. That's why I voted against it. I don't think the bill does what it needs to do to secure the border."
Roy said he was part of the litigation efforts with the Texas Attorney General's office to stop former President Barack Obama's executive order on the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program, and he considers that action an "overreach" that had no "lawful basis."
"The Fifth Circuit agreed, the Supreme Court agreed," said Roy. "We showed that the president created benefits where they didn't exist. There was no law backing it up."
Roy said he does want to look more at what Trump is planning to do, but at the same time, "Congress abandoned its job to do what is necessary to secure the border."
